Geography is an essential factor in understanding a country's foreign policy but not one to be seen or presented in automatic terms. Geopolitics emerges as central part of debates in which such views are advanced and identified with those of states. For example, it is impossible to understand the history of American, British and Russian strategic and foreign policies without taking into consideration their geographic circumstances.
