In the 80s, North Korea was still accumulating prestige in the trappings of a modern society. The population better and more colorfully dressed with many new stores full of imported consumer goods. On the cultural side, this was the Golden Age of North Korean cinema. South Korea's proud achievement is economic progress without contentment. Even today's prosperity is haunted by state violence and passionate dissent.
