Brams - A Chord That Describes the Third Movement

There's been no hint of militaristic music or fanfares so far in the entire piece. And this music is jarringly different from the warmth and loving quality of the opening of the third movement. I do have some theories though. The first, most basic one is that brahms was looking for some contrasting material to the opening, and felt that a fanfare like march section would work well to get that contrast. A more out there theory, admittedly, is that this music sounds to me a bit defiant and more than a little bit like the music of robert schumann.
