Marriage was considered a matter of public interest in ancient Greece. Sparta's laws encouraged the subordination of private interests and personal happiness to the good of the public. The Greeks considered technopoyoye or childbearing is the main object of marriage. Still though, matchmaking among the ancients remained outside that dominion of political and legal regulation.
