The New Atlantis - How Stewart Made Tucker

The New Atlantis published an article this morning about how John Stewart made Tucker Carlson. In the 1980s, most news organizations on TV lost money because they had to appeal to as big a slice of the American public as possible. But with cable and 24-hour news cycles, you didn't have to appeal to everybody anymore. You actually needed a loyal consumer for your product. The new business model meant cultivating ties with a particular niche audience by providing content that would enthralling them. And it also means building identities around media brands such as Stewart or Colbert.
