The British Oppositional Literature of the 17th Century
The 17th century in Britain was a time of great upheaval. The opposition literature which absorbed so much of the 17th century background was what the Americans fed on. It was exactly what they were looking for. And it was that that was deepest in their minds, as opposed to systematic treatises like Locke or Rousseau.
