Science and Democracy in the United States

In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, there was more of an acceptance of natural history as part of the project of politics. The polymaths who assumed that they should know these many things, including religion, did not disentangle them in the same way that we seem to be disentangling now. In our kind of current contact, science as an enterprise that either serves state interests, or at the very least science for science's sake, is regarded as important.
