How Do We Really Know That There Was an Extinction?

Fossils of many species that are found in rocks before any extinction event. They're just not found in younger layers of rock after that extinction event and they never come back. The late Devonian was actually the second of those to occur in time. If we looked at a rock before this mass extinction we would have seen globally widespread very spectacular reef ecosystems.
