The Greatest Moment of the Navy Yard

On December 7, 1941, the Japanese attacked the naval base in Pearl Harbor. 1,177 of the over 1,500 crewmen on board were killed in the attack. The Brooklyn Navy Yard bid for the ship at such a low figure that experts in Washington did not believe it could be done. At news of the sinking of the Arizona, 5,000 miles away in Brooklyn, preparations were made to ramp up production even further and bring into the Navy Yard a whole new workforce.
