The History of the Popular Front
At the core were republicans, those parties that strongly supported the continuation of the republic as it had been created in 1931. The most populous and powerful group within the popular front was the PSOE or the Spanish Socialist Party led by Francisco Caballero. A growing Catalan and Basque nationalism added another layer of friction between the various groups. Another major component of the republic aligned forces was provided by the very powerful and populous anarchists.
