The Field of Artificial Intelligence Is the Archetypal Field of a Field

I don't know much about AI, but when I hear some of the criticisms that are made by skeptics, I may be here a little bit that they're trying to force it into an old mold. But actually we're in a different situation today. Our ability to test our tinkering is just so much greater than it has been in the past. We can try many, many, many more possibilities just automatically. So we don't need really strong theoretical explanations to rule out incorrect lines of investigation. It's very tempting to say, oh, this is the prototype for a field. But part of what's exciting is when things work in very different ways and violate those expectations.
