Linux: The Most Successful Operating System of All Time
Everything else is built on top of the kernel. Android started as a startup company in the middle of those and then it was purchased by Google they didn't want to read that the wheel and create their own kernel from scratch. Instead they took Linux which already existed already been around for about 15 years by then and was already battle tested and they built around it. There's a lot of different kernels out there but Linux has just become really dominant in terms because it works well It's highly portable it's been ported all over the place and there's lots of momentum and development around it.
