Joshua Norton, Emperor of the United States

Joshua Norton declared himself Emperor of the United States in September 1859. He chose to be styled by his last name and with a number, so became known as "Norton the first" Normally emperors choose to be known by their first names like Queen Elizabeth II of England. But monarchs get to choose how people refer to them - there have been exceptions such as Pope John Paul the first.
