The Role of Dogma in Political Theory
The idea that if we can just turn the knob on presidential power this way, we can get everybody to play along with our political theory is nonsense. Israel has managed to stay a democracy despite the fact that there are virtually no serious Montesquilian or Madisonian checks and balances in Israel because of the attitudes and expectations of the Israeli people. We don't argue about ritual human sacrifice in this country because everybody basically agrees it's settled dogma that that's wrong and should be illegal. And anybody who seriously started proposing that kind of thing would be mocked, ridiculed, you know, checked into a institution of some kind,. right?
