John Audubon and his wife Lucy owned a general store in Louisville, Kentucky. They sold their business to Alexander Wilson, who was creating an ornithology of the new nation's birds. When John saw Wilson's drawings he refused to subscribe because they were too cartoonish. The couple eventually went into bankruptcy after making bad moves that landed them in prison.
