The Importance of Gender Pronouns
It seems to me like you could have grammatical gender and not distinguish it on the on the pronouns. If someone knows a natural language that does this I'd love to hear about it but that's the whole point of gender pronouns are one of the first things to show up as having agreement. That's English because we lost all grammatical gender but we have gender distinctions and third person pronouns. And certainly that can be used in the Bantu systems especially where the same root is used with different gender marking or class marking to change the meaning. The last thing that Mark gives in his lists is it gives language and another dimension to seep into, he says.
