How to Disclose Bad News to Patients and Families

There are multiple published guidelines that currently recommend that genetic testing for AD should only occur judiciously and then only in the context of thorough genetic counseling. Some of these guidelines even go so far as to recommend that susceptibility testing for specific loci like APOE do not occur at all. So you want to be realistic about their risk and fact-based, but there is an opportunity to offer hope when you're emphasizing that this is a risk gene. It's still such a new area that we need to make sure that we understand it before.
