How to Replace Bacteria in Cow's Stomachs

A team at Washington State University have done an experiment with a bio-reactor that's designed to mimic the stomach of a cow. They filled it with some cow stomach fluid and they put in the same nutrients that you'd find in cow's stomachs. Then they collected some fresh kangaroo dung from petting zoos and they grew the bacteria from that in the lab. And then they put these bacteria into the artificial cow stomach. When they did that, first it didn't have much effect on the methodogens. But when they tried adding a chemical that inhibits the methodogens and then putting in the other bacteria so that they could outcompete them, then that did work
