By 5000 BC, the farmers of old Europe had already been living in this region for more than a thousand years. This wasn't a homogenous region; there were probably multiple languages or at least strongly separated dialects. There were variations in subsistence practices and settlement patterns depending on precisely where you were. But the commonalities were more important than the differences - their cultural practices absolutely work.
