Slavery and the Code Noir

The treatment of slaves was allegedly governed by the code noir, which had been promulgated in 16 85. Slaves were legally human property, but they did have some basic protections. Owners found it much less expensive to give the slaves small pots of land to work themselves rather than pay for provisions. They would rise just before dawn, work until a short breakfast, then go back to work until midday break and then goback to work until sundown. This was repeated every day but sunday, week in and week out, until you dropped dead. And if you are exhausted and just stop working for a minute, you get whipped or beaten. I mean, this is real slavery.
