The Importance of Elijah's Prophetic Authority
The Jews always struggled with the desire for outward glory and kingship. And I think what you have in John the Baptist is the mantle of Elijah's prophetic authority regarding the Old Testament. So he would deny that he was Elijah, but he meant it in the sense of, I'm not Elijah come back from the dead. But yeah, just a couple of follow up thoughts. You're absolutely 100% right about the way that Jesus is teaching and the authority that Jesus teaching has for us.
