Introduction

Anastasius' reign was marked by a tension in the Byzantine world. Peace on one hand, and continued upheaval on the other. The Emperor's reputation for being careful with his money led to some popular financial reforms as well as unpopular scaling back of public entertainment. His monophysite sympathies were further agitating the citizens of the capital after he replaced their popular patriarch with a more pliable man in Macedonia.
