Case 199: Truro
Casefile True Crime
Warrell and Miller's Unsworn Statement
Amelia feared she would be dobbing in an innocent man. For the defence miller ropted to prepare unsworn statement for court. Unsworn statement is where accused presents their version of events without having to swear under oath and isn't subject to cross examination. By choosing this option, it meant that miller's entire case relied on his own statement. The jury were advised by the judge to scrutinize miller's version of events carefully before deciding what weight should be attributed to it. It took miller close to an hour to deliver his 50 page version of the seven murders. In detail, this description differed to the confession he provided to police after his arrest.
