The History of Bummer and Lazarus

There was a newspaper cartoonist living in San Francisco named Edward Jump and he featured the emperor and the two dogs in a number of his cartoons. In 1863 Lazarus died, allegedly after having been poisoned with rat-bain, meaning rat poison. Bummer himself passed on in 1865 after being kicked by a drunk named Henry Rippy to keep the city from erupting in violence.
