The Salivarian Tripan Somes, a Species Complex in the Tripan Soma Genus
The salivarian tripan somes are thought to have originated in africa and split off from the other tripan some around 300 million years ago. They probably became gut commensels, or maybe even par sites, of these early insects. It's not clear exactly when they began venturing out of their fly hosts into mammalian animals but it certainly doesn't seem to have been a recent development.
