Introduction
The Big Five are the lion, the leopard, the rhinoceros, the elephant and the Cape buffalo. These safari animals are an important part of South Africa's national identity. People used to hunt them for meat and other parts, such as hide or ivory. All of the Big Five animals have some level of conservation status.
