Darias and the Skidians

Darias pursued the Skidians for a month, but they outmaneuvered him by taking a roundabout course inland and turning back towards western Skidia. While Darias continued this wild goose chase along the northern Black Sea shoreline, the other group of Skidians were off forcibly recruiting other tribes to join them. The Persians finally camped his army at an uninhabited region by the Oerys River, the modern day Volga River, to the northeast of the Black Sea in modern day Russia. There, Herodotus reports that he began to build eight huge forts, at about six miles apart from one another; no traces of these forts
