Pope Leo III was elected pope in 795, the same day as his predecessor's burial. His opponents had gradually ramped up their attacks on him during his first four years of rule. They cut off his clothes, stabbed at his eyes and wrenched open his mouth trying to cut out his tongue. But inside the cell, something strange happened: Pope Leo began to heal.
