The Impact of Smoking on Flights

In 1987, a study by the National Cancer Institute found that passengers in non smoking sections were exposed to cigarette smoke. Legislation to ban smoking on all domestic flights permanently was introduced in the US Senate in March of 1989. The House Transportation Committee's Aviation Subcommittee held hearings in June regarding legislation limiting or banning smoking on airlines. A survey conducted by the American Association of Respiratory Care indicated more than 80% of 30,000 passengers surveyed wanted to see a permanent extension of the ban.
