The Sandinista Revolution in Nicaragua
Carlos Pensky was a leader of the so-called popular church that worked with Christian-based communities in Nicaragua. He'd also been involved in the Sandinista Revolution that had overthrown the US-backed dictator General Anastacio Samosa in 1979. By the time Pope John Paul II was due to visit, Nicaragua and society as a whole was becoming more polarized. The country was in the throes of civil war, with attacks from US-funded contra-revals trying to unseat the Sandinistas government. But according to Carlos Pensky, the Sandinismo leadership was keen to avoid confrontation with the Pope.
