The Real End of the 19 Sixties
19 73 is often called the real end of the 19 sixties. Berkeley's free speech movement had helped launch the movement in 19 64, but its best and brightest had long since moved on to other causes. The country as a whole seemed to be waking up from something. People were looking back and trying to figure out what had happened. It was a theme that came through even in pop culture. I decided it was time to make a movie where people felt better coming out of the theatre than when they went in.
