The Importance of Prediction Error in Children
When we ask children to shift from something they're doing that they enjoy to something that we need them to do, it's such a common scenario. Here's a concept from neuroscience that helps explain that big, huge reaction. It's called prediction error. Our brains are always predicting what's going to happen next based on our past experience. With younger children with toddlers and sometimes with adults, if what they are being asked to do violates their prediction. Human little brains don't like prediction errors. It stresses them out.
