The Second Crusade
Eleanor set out on crusade not just as the consort of the king, but as a crusader in her own right. Many noble women followed eleanor's lead by taking crusading vows of their own. The second crusade proved to be an embarrassing debaccle for the european forces. For the contemporary european chroniclers, the bloody disappointment that was the second crusade required an explanation and they found an easy scapegoat in female crusaders.
