African American doctors and lawyers have higher maternal mortality rate than white women who were high school dropouts. Long-term exposure to cascades of stress hormones causes a lot of different health vulnerabilities. Shalon Irving had already lost both of her siblings, a baby brother in a car accident and then her beloved older brother Sam died slowly from MS. As a primary caregiver Shalon fretted over what she saw as subpar treatment being offered to Sam because he was black and on Medicaid.
