When people go on moral crusades against something, what they are often really doing is articulating their own fear of being left behind. So we talke about the novel being a means of escape for women who might be in unhappy lives. And it's almost like if we let women read a bunch of stories about women who are in love, they will maybe realize that what they have has not been nearly as good and that they identify with the people who are doing something about it. But i would caution anybody, if you see somebody going apoplectic over some cultural shift At least don't turn on cable news or listen to your local radio station just yet.
