Shakespeare's Romans prefigure what Hegel calls the unhappy consciousness. Hamlet says, I could be bounded in a nutshell and count myself king of infinite space where it not for bad dreams. And ultimately we're constrained by a world outside ourselves, including especially our relations with other people.
