Michael Edwards, a former executive of the Ford Foundation, has become a vocal critic of the new philanthropist's mentality. He argues that private philanthropy is no substitution for hard-fought battles over labour laws and social security. The share of young people running their own business has fallen by two thirds since the 1980s. Low paid work has declined and the income of the bottom half has stagnated while the rich have gotten immeasurably richer.
