The US Support of Islamists in West Papua
Greg Polgren's interpretation of this is that it was a way to take control of West Papua and set the groundwork for regime change. The US has telegraphed, that's what it wants to do with China on its borders, is to destabilize Central Asia. And there are several scholars that, even Joe Biden has praised at Harvard that have written about that very explicitly. So I think that is sort of the calculation going on here of trying to undermine the Netherlands, and also undermine Sukarno by rationing the tension in the country.
