Deep vision is a project that aims to sequence and identify all new viruses. The goal is to find out if they have the potential to cause pandemics. Deep vision has been going on for five years, but there are now more than 100 million samples being sequenced in half the amount of time it used to take two hundred.

In this episode of the podcast, Rob Reid and Kevin Esvelt discuss USAID’s new “Deep VZN” program, which aims to discover new pandemic-grade viruses and publish their genomes to the world. Esvelt estimates that there are currently around 30,000 people who could then easily build them.
