The History of Taiwan's Camphor Industry
In 1930 DuPont and Soviet chemists learned how to use Fuller's Earth and titanium oxide to produce synthetic camphor. The Japanese Empire weren't going to allow anyone or anything to get in their way of obtaining it. It's ironic that as much damage as the Japanese did to eradicate indigenous culture no one up to their time had done more to study them from an anthropological and taxonomic perspective.
