Protectionism and the European Union
Bretton Woods institutions and policies followed by the International Monetary Fund aimed to open up the world economy. But countries that were central, whether it was Britain or France, had inherited some protectionist policies from the interwar period and the war. The aim of the liberal order in the first quarter century after the war was to open things up. Opening things up too fast exposed domestic industry and workers and others and farmers also to competition needed to be controlled.
