The west is fundamentally different from islam because we're scientific and rationalist. But there have been plenty of western people who considered themselves scientific or rational, who have believed all kinds of nutty things. In the nineteenth century when newton's physics was becoming widely accepted, spiritualists were talking to the dead. And as i have pointed out before, there was a kind of craze for mesmerism and ideas of animal magnetism during that time.
