In the 50s, 60s and even a good Chuck in the 1970s, most advanced technology was procured for defense needs. The only people who could pay for these early transistors and then integrated circuits were Department of Defense subcontractors. That's no longer true today. When PCs came around, now of a sudden when mass markets for electronics came out, the cost drivers were making them cheaper are consumer markets.
