What's Going on in Britannia?
The conflict between East and West did not directly cause the trouble with alleric in the Visigoths that we'll end up talking about later. But it certainly presented an open flank for him to exploit, since the two empires were taking turns trying to exploit the military power that the Goths provided. The poet Claudian wrote briefly of some sort of trouble with the Picts, Scots, Irish, and Saxons. And apparently it was so bad that later a punitive campaign was ordered by Stilico. Unfortunately, a few lines of a poem doesn't really give us a clear picture of what might have happened or indeed whether anything happened at all.
