Because they're saying, hey, there's an opportunity to get better click through rates on the ads if we mix them with the result. And that's why they have featured snippets. They're all keeping you on Google and therefore letting Google sell you more ads as opposed to taking you to someone else's site where they will sell you ads. But my main point here is that this represents radically different philosophy from the original founding principles.
