I do think a real problem with the so-called new atheist movement was this insistence on reducing religion to an epistemological question. While I do think religions have unleashed all kinds of unnecessary suffering in the world, I also believe that any attempt to understand religion or transcendent requires us to think seriously about what it actually means for people guided by it. And if you are someone who thinks debunking the Bible as a book of bad science is going to do the trick, you're barking up the wrong tree.
