How to Tell if a Gun Was Recently Fired

There were many suspicious things about Thomas Jennings. He was found with a revolver that they say had been recently fired and the cartridges match those found near Hiller's body. How do you know if a gun's been recently fired? There really is no way to put a timeframe onto a gun and say it's been recently fire versus previously fired at some point.
