The largest source of sports idioms in English actually come from team sports. Cricket gives us several phrases, such as sticky wicket and hat trick. If you are doing something for which you are not qualified, you are said to be out of your league. A Hail Mary is a play that doesn't happen very often, but can be very dramatic. In American football, an end-round run is when a player with the ball in a wide arc around all of his teammates so it doesn't have any obstacles.
