Clinicians can have the most actionable influence through helping patients not plan their whole life around uncertain or unrealistic hopes. In other words, helping patients commit to some preparation in the here and now while allowing hope for the future. If someone says, I know that you told me I'm going to live five months, I'm convinced I'll live five years. They're making a prediction about the future that neither of us know who's going to be right.
