I don't think that it was a foregone conclusion at all that it was going to stay in Ukraine and hands. There were some things that were just very fortuitous that happened. And so there were fatal flaws on the part of Russia and luck and good planning on the parts of Ukraine. But as with other decapitation plans, the attacker needs to rely on fifth columnists, collaborators, quizlings and other things which clearly exist in Ukraine but not nearly to the extent that Vladimir Putin expected them to.
